Topps
Announces Plans for its Newest Collectible Card Franchise
Indiana Jones Heritage Trading Cards On Sale Today
After a nearly
25-year hiatus, Topps is back together with Indiana Jones. The storied
card marketer, who offered Raiders of the Lost Ark cards
in 1981 and Temple of Doom cards in 1984, plans an ongoing
program around everyone’s favorite action-adventure hero.In comic and
hobby stores today, Indiana Jones Heritage takes a retrospective
look back at the original movies – Raiders of the Lost
Ark, Temple of Doom and The Last Crusade. Complete
with packaging and card designs inspired by Topps earlier work
with the property, Indiana Jones Heritage has a decidedly
vintage, “old school” feel. Many memorable, iconic
scenes are included in this 90-card, triple movie treat. Plus,
reminiscent of Topps cards from yesteryear, packs include one
piece of bubble gum. ToppsTV's
new video, which spotlights the company’s artist sketch
cards, has just debuted on multiple sites, including YouTube and
Veoh.com. It most prominently features Topps' latest series to
include sketches – Indiana Jones Heritage. This
video explains what sketch cards are, explores their history and
includes an interview with one of the sketch artists.
The second
phase of the program commences prior to the theatrical release
of the new movie, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal
Skull. While the film premieres in theaters on Memorial Day
weekend, Topps will ship its all-movie series to hobby, specialty
and mass merchandisers on May 1. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom
of the Crystal Skull movie cards promise to be a worthy companion
to the highly anticipated film and a treasured keepsake for years
to come.The Indiana
Jones property has inspired many talented artists whose work
has adorned familiar movie posters as well as the covers of numerous
books and comics. A fine selection of these breathtaking images
– plus newly commissioned, never-before-seen works –
will comprise the program’s third card series, Indiana
Jones Masterpieces. Planned for release around the holidays, Indiana Jones Masterpieces follows in the tradition
of Topps’ highly successful, all-art-based Lord of the Rings
Masterpieces. “The
marketplace is enormously excited that we’re back in business
with Indiana Jones,” states Ira Friedman, Topps
VP of Publishing. “It helps that
most of our customers are fans who grew up on the original films
and, just like Star Wars (another Lucas creation), consider these
properties near and dear to their hearts”, says Friedman.

little something to tease as we approach the street date release
for Indiana Jones Heritage. I've been fortunate enough
to receive a 'Hobby' box to open and review.
I
tore through the packages pretty quick. Well I did slow down long
enough to open the plastic wrapped gum. I'd forgotten how good
trading card gum is! So with mouth full I finished up and flipped
the cards to see what treasure I had uncovered.
I
got enough cards to make a 90-card base set (and extras, of course).
Images below are for cards 1-9 front and back. The set is made
up of 27 images from Raiders of the Lost Ark, 27 from Temple of Doom and 27 from Last Crusade. The
remaining images are art cards with the final card being the checklist.
I
also won the equivalent of the trading card lottery - I snagged
an autograph card (Vic Tablian - 'MonkeyMan'), 1 sketch card (by
Alex Buchel) and 3 parallel cards (each numbered out of 500).
The parallel set has identical images to the base 90-set but on
a thicker white card stock and gold-number stamped.
After
I inserted the cards in to my pages I took the time to look them
over and read the backs. I felt like I was 16 again. What fun!
I've now flipped through them several time and can't wait for
my case I ordered to arrive on March 19th.
And
don't forget the 'Retail' versions available at your local K-Mart,
Target and Wal-Mart (which include same base set cards but have
magnetic-cards as the special random inserts).

Spielberg and producer George Lucas – a powerful combination
sure to create box office magic!

hunger of fans for official Indiana Jones merchandise.

of the Crystal Skull movie cards shipping around the new
film. Details to follow.
*While these
actors have agreed to sign, Topps cannot guarantee that the autographs
will be received in time for inclusion in the product.
The Topps Company is
among a select few licensees releasing official merchandise in
advance of the summer 2008 movie, “Indiana Jones and
the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.” The company’s Indiana Jones Heritage cards will ship at the end of
February and will be available exclusively in hobby and specialty
markets, not at mass retail.
The card imagery
will feature 90 memorable scenes from all three original movies,
with card designs paying homage to the “Raiders of the
Lost Ark” cards first published by Topps in 1981. The
retro-inspired Heritage branding and packaging – complete
with vintage grey-back card stock and bubble gum in every pack
– is sure to resonate with many collectors who grew up with
the earlier Indiana Jones films.
Topps is in
the process of finalizing arrangements with numerous cast members
of the original movies to provide authentic autographs for the
series. A list of confirmed signees will be announced shortly.
An impressive roster of well-known illustrators is also on board
to contribute original, one-of-a-kind Indiana Jones sketch cards.
In addition, sequentially-numbered parallel cards round out the
random, insert card offerings.
Overall interest
in the Indiana Jones franchise is building. A recent
nationwide poll of moviegoers, conducted by Movie
Tickets.com, concluded that the upcoming Indiana Jones movie, now in post production, is the #1 anticipated film
scheduled for next year. As announced sometime ago, the original
creative team of Harrison Ford, director Steven Spielberg and
executive producer George Lucas has re-united to bring this latest
Indiana Jones adventure to the screen.
“We’re
thrilled to be associated once again with this truly extraordinary
property”, says Ira Friedman, Topps/VP of Publishing. “Our
Heritage treatment for the original movies is a nostalgic and
fun way to kick off our Indiana Jones trading card initiative.
We’re certain the core fans will treasure this early appetizer;
the first phase of an ongoing program that will transition to
the new movie and beyond.” says Friedman.
Indiana
Jones Heritage will carry a suggested retail selling price
of $2 per 5-card pack
